Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Skin

By Kent Pinkerton Skin, be it brown, white or black, is vulnerable to exposure to various external factors. Be it the sun, rain, snow, sleet, fire or air, everything leaves its mark in some form, from very minor problems like tanning to very severe effects like burns. According to the dictionary, skin is defined as the external covering of any living thing. In humans, it refers to the covering of the body, which is made up of layers of tissue that protect the organs and muscles beneath. It is basically composed of the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis is the topmost layer containing no blood vessels. The next layer is the dermis, which contains blood vessels, hair follicles, glands and lymphatic tissue, and the hypodermis attaches the skin to the underlying bone and muscle. Skin’s main functions are protection against the weather, insulation in cold climates and keeping the body cool through the process of sweating in hotter climates. It thus controls the temperature of the body. It has the ability to feel, and last but not least, it synthesizes vitamins A and D with the help of sunlight. The pigmentation in the skin is useful in absorbing harmful radiation and contains enzymes that can reverse ultraviolet-induced damage to the skin. It is the melanin in the skin that determines the color of the skin. Another factor is the geographical location of the person. Evolution has been such that each person’s body has evolved in a manner best suited to the climate of his location. Five Best Ways To Pay For College

By Chris Stout Although you will enjoy the experience tremendously, going to college will cost you at least an arm and possibly a leg. If you accept the fact early on that you need extra funds to pay for this investment, then youll be motivated to start looking for financial assistance opportunities. Here are the five best ways to pay for college. 1. Scholarships Scholarships are a prospective college students primary aid objective. Apply for as many scholarships as you can, because if you just get one, youll end up saving thousands of dollars on your college costs. Scholarships dont have to be paid back. You may have to fulfill certain requirements, but you arent going to make any repayments on your scholarship awards. Scholarships can be need or performance-based. There are scholarships out there that cater to every single imaginable identity, from football players to cancer survivors to Mormons. Put in the time to find scholarships that you are eligible for, and apply for as many as possible. 2. Grants Grants are the next best thing to a scholarship. Grants do not need to be repaid. You can receive thousands of grant dollars from your university as well as local, state and federal governments. Make sure that you have filled out all the grant applications you qualify for. Get your FAFSA turned in early every year. The more free money you get, the less you have to pay back. So get on the ball and start looking for grants. 3. Loans Loans are not as appealing as scholarships and grants, but they can come in very handy. If you get a student loan, you need to understand what you are getting yourself into. Subsidized loans are awarded based on financial need. They do not accrue interest while you are in school. Unsubsidized loans are not need based. When you take out an unsubsidized loan, you will accrue interest while you are in school. Be sure that you go to your loan exit review, so that you understand the terms of your repayment obligations once you graduate. 4. Work Get a job. Pay as you go. Invest as you invest. If you have money coming in, youll be more secure during and after your college experience. 5. Family You can always hit up your family members for money. Be honest with each other. Know what to expect and whats expected. Have all the facts out on the table so that you can plan accordingly. If you prepare for the financial impact of college, youll be in a better position once you graduate. Dont assume anything. Get the answers to your financial questions ahead of time, and remember to apply for aid at least one year before you a Take a look at more industry related articles by Chris Stout at CareersandEducation.com Chris Stout is a frequent contributor with articles pertaining to using Distance Learning and Career Advice. Love in a Triangular Theory

By Lexi Jewlgia Professor Robert J. Sternberg developed the idea that love was made of three different components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. When he combined the elements in various ways, he created eight types of love. He believed because we are subjected to numerous love stories throughout our lives that it created a ladder of high expectations. Intimacy is having the ability to confide in someone even if there is a fear of rejection. If mistakes are made, or if there are disagreements in the relationship, the person is still forgiving and open-minded. A comfortable friendship lies within intimacy. Intense feelings of physical and sexual attraction come from passion. This side of love may have a combination of apprehension and uncertainty due to the belief that the feelings may not be reciprocated. In the beginning of a relationship, the level of passion may be so high that you do not recognize the other persons faults. However, once they surpass the “getting to know each other” stage the passion may slowly fade away. When two people decide to make a commitment to one another, they should be willing to make sacrifices for each other. Commitment means being dedicated in doing things to foster the relationship and protect it from becoming damaged. They make the decision to make necessary efforts to maintain their love. Listed below are various types of love and how they are defined by Sternberg: 1. Liking: Relying on someone without having passion or commitment. You are able to be open and honest with this person. It can be similar to a doctor/patient relationship. 2. Infatuation: Having passion for one another, but lacking commitment and intimacy. This type of “love” usually happens with a crush. 3. Empty Love: There is a commitment, but an absence of passion and intimacy. 4. Fatuous Love: High altitudes of compassion and commitment, but low levels of intimacy. 5. Compassionate Love: Having a commitment with high levels of intimacy, but not on a sexual level. This is the type of love that exists in platonic friendships. 6. Consummate Love: This is what many people refer to as the love of all loves because euphoric levels of passion, commitment, and intimacy are what makes this love so powerful. Happy marriages are built from this type of love. 7. Non-Love: Having absolutely no sense of compassion, feelings of intimacy, or desire for commitment toward another person. 8. Romantic Love: This type of love is a combination of both passion and intimacy. Everyone has their own definition of love, and it varies according to the type of relationship you have with that person. Certainly, the love you carry for a friend is different than the love you feel for your spouse. Researching Sternberg’s triangular theory of love made me wonder, when it comes love, at which level do we love someone and and at which level are we being loved in return. It’s crucial to consider these things when making decisions that can affect your future, things such as marriage. Become an Unforgettable Woman – 40 Fabulous Secrets

By Paul Davis Looks aren’t everything. If you don’t have it going on outwardly, be encouraged. There are other things you can do to up the ante and increase your value to the opposite sex. 1. Respect yourself and others individuality. Self-respect is the foundation of everything. Begin with yourself. As you treat yourself, so will the rest of the world. Be respecting of yourself and everyone else will follow. Remember you reap what you sow. Therefore if you want respect, give others the same. 2. Be fun and playful. Life is too short to be excessively serious. Lighten up and have some fun. People need to be more playful and enjoy life. Get rid of heaviness and put a smile on your face. A simply smile will greatly enhance your personal appearance. Smiling is contagious and lights up a room. Be playful and childlike. Life becomes sweeter when you do and people are naturally drawn to you. 3. Have a sense of humor. Laughter lightens the soul and makes you inwardly whole. Laughter is empowering and intoxicating. It is better than any drug known to man and it doesnt cost anything. Dont take yourself so seriously. See the humorous side of everything. 4. Be complimentary. Make your man feel he is larger than life when hes with you. Men are like God, they enjoy being praised. The more you praise, dote on, and affirm them the greater they become. Compliments embolden a man to be a man and live up to your expectations. 5. Get your life and finances in order. Men like women who have themselves and their lives together. Life is complicated enough as it is without having a lady entering the picture and becoming an additional liability. Strategically purpose to get your life and finances in order. Be an asset in every way to a man. Become his most valuable player. 6. Make an unforgettable home. A man can have a house, but a womans touch makes it a home. Men desire a womans loving touch and domestic skill on the home front. Dont underestimate the value of a domesticated woman. 7. Cook like a chef. Women who can cook well endear men. After all, be reason of survival, we all must eat three meals a day. Sadly many men dont eat properly anymore in this fast paced day and age. A lovely candlelight meal is a marvelous way to break the ice and have some meaningful conversation. 8. Give an irresistible massage. Work weary men full of tension like to receive expressions of affection. A massage is a particular favorite, which will not be forgotten. Guys who exercise in the gym often have tight muscles that would benefit from a good massage. 9. Always encourage, uplift, and speak kindly. Words are an often forgotten love language that sets the spirit of a relationship. Words determine the atmosphere throughout an interaction. Wild and unruly women who cannot rule their tongue are a big turnoff. A woman with class and kindness speaks like a princess. Hence she will be rewarded and treated like one for her bridled speech. A man wants a lady he can take out on the town and be proud of. Loose lips will quickly deplete any mans confidence in a woman. If you shout and talk like a fishermans wife, it is highly unlikely you will get asked out to fancy places. Get a grip on your tongue and purify your heart. From the overflow of the heart comes the words of the mouth. 10. Be helpful and offer to assist however you can. Guys like helpful girls who lighten their load and dont add to it. Fair weather friends are many. A lady who can prove to be helpful will quickly distinguish herself from the rest of the crowd. 11. Listen attentively and wholeheartedly. Women often play the drama queen or victim to manipulate situations. This posturing doesnt enable them to communicate well. Listening is the key to communication. The women who can sincerely listen with their heart and be fully present when a man is talking, will quickly go to the top of the list when he needs someone he can count on. 12. Provide sympathy and tenderness. Make your man feel safe and loved unconditionally. It will enable him to be honest and transparent with you. Rough women arent extremely popular with guys. A man has his parents to tell him what he ought to and should be doing. He needs a lady to kindly and sympathetically encourage him en route to his destination. 13. Be quiet, gentle, and elegant. If in doubt, dont be quick to speak out. The women who holds her tongue when not knowing what to say appears to be wise. You learn more when you listen. Listening opens the door for additional knowledge and insight. A gentle woman will walk and speak softly. This will never be thought of as weakness by men. On the contrary, your ability to harness and manage your emotions will be considered a great strength. 14. Be wise and able to provide good advice when called upon. The woman with a pleasant disposition who listens and carries herself well, opens the door for her man to talk to her. When he does open up and ask you for your advice, be prepared to give it. 15. Live your own dreams and be fulfilled. A person who is living their dreams is passionate and fulfilled. This adds to the power of your presence. Since so few people do live their dreams, you will thereby create an insatiable curiosity by doing so. 16. Be happy by yourself and impart happiness everywhere you go. Happiness is an inside job. It is not found in a person or thing. The hidden treasure of happiness is buried deep within your own heart. Cultivate and develop it daily. Once you have possessed it, kindly give it away and thereby multiply it everywhere you go. 17. Give the gift of quality time. Time is our most precious commodity. Giving people your time in a quality way and fashion will endear them to you. 18. Be their cheerleader and take interest in their profession. Everybody needs encouragement and praise for accomplishment. Provide that and take an interest in your mans profession. By doing so you will also captivate him as a person. 19. Honor, visit, and enjoy their family. When you take an interest in a person, equally regard and get to know their family also. In doing so, you will draw near and become closer to them. 20. Discover their hobbies and get involved. Everyone has hobbies and interests. Find out what they are and get involved. As you do, you will be seen as someone who understands and is enjoyable to be with. 21. Dress and carry yourself well. Outward appearance can be improved by how we dress and physically carry ourselves. Despite your physique, which I urge you to properly care for, you can dress stylishly and elegantly. Keep your head up and walk like a model. Walk like you own the place and people will begin to treat you like you do. 22. Provide intellectual stimulation. Have an active and inquisitive mind. Ask questions and probe for further information. People like good, provocative conversation. Those who ask questions nobody else does get the interview and are privileged to go deeper into a persons soul. 23. Don’t complain or criticize others. Positive people possess the power of presence. Don’t lose it to entertain criticisms. If you can’t say something nice and add to a person, say nothing at all. If you gossip about someone, you send a message to your man that he is next to be gossiped about. 24. Dont stress and burden him with your problems. Life is a celebration, not an opportunity to perplex about problems and devastation. Be proactive and deal with your own problems. Nobody wants to have your stress and burdens added to their lives. 25. Be secure and remain emotionally detached. Never adversely react to undesirable decisions or situations beyond your control. Be your personal best and forget about the rest. Cultivate inner contentment and allow people to be free. Love them unconditionally and be willing to let them leave if this seemingly will make them happy. By doing so you remove the urge and tendency to manipulate. Thereafter you will discover true freedom and inner satisfaction, after which you will begin to celebrate yourself and become unstoppable. 26. Be authentic and true to yourself. Never compromise your identity. Identity is your destiny. Who you are as a person should never be reworked or changed so as to appeal to a guy. Be yourself and if he doesnt like it, find someone else. Guys like women who are authentic, leaders and not followers. 27. Be spiritually in touch. Spirituality will add to you an additional ingredient and intangible power that will enhance any interaction. As you become more spiritually in touch, your fears will disintegrate and you will authenticate your person. Connecting with your Creator imparts supernatural life, which no mortal can resist. 28. Be congruent, confident, and assertive. Inner confidence is outwardly communicated. Be inwardly congruent and confident. If you need to integrate some areas of your life and get it together, consult a life coach. Once you are congruent and confident you will know who you are and what you want. Thereafter you shall assert yourself naturally. Guys like women who know what they want and arent afraid to say so. 29. Be daring and willing to take risks. Boldness many times is the bridge to take you over into your dreams relationally and professionally, without which you will remain forever stranded on the shore of wishful thinking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you dont take chances, you wont make advances. Be willing to fall forward. Life is a learning experience. Get out there and make some things happen. You will be glad you did. The only things you regret in life is that which you dont do. 30. Dont be a doormat. Never allow a guy to mistreat you. Remember the necessity to respect yourself. That means you dont let a guy take advantage of your sexually or any other way. Just because you are gifted and giving does not give any guy a license to take advantage of you and misuse your good graces. Beware of the proverbial user who is just a taker and not a giver. 31. Set proper boundaries and perimeters in place. A princess full of elegance sets proper boundaries, guidelines, and perimeters in place. Her interaction with others, men specifically, is carefully monitored and planned. She does not allow herself to be jeopardized. Every princess has a king to whom she hearkens and listens. Ladies, perhaps this will be your father or grandfather. Someone who cares about you and can give you fatherly advice. A womans mother can also be a refuge and source of strength when dealing with the opposite sex. Nevertheless you draft up your own boundaries, guidelines, and restraints. Once you do, never deviate from them. This makes you more valuable and desirable. Any woman can play the tramp and just go with the flow. A princess governs the show. 32. Know how to say no without feeling guilty. Say no without feeling guilty. Your no does not need to be followed by an explanation, nor does it require elaboration as to why. A man must respect your no, or he must go. 33. Refuse to be like everybody else. Dont you ever conform to the norm. Break the mold, set the trends, and be a unique gem. You were born an original. Dont die a copy. 34. Be a person of conviction. In our day many people cant commit to what they believe and choose to play everything as relative. A woman who has her own convictions is attractive and desirable. 35. Make a man earn your trust. Dont blindly trust a guy without having sufficient time to test and prove him. A mans word is his worth. Ask around and find out information about him. Do your homework. Dont be gullible and get burned. Use some discretion. Dont prematurely give your heart away and commit to someone who you know nothing about. Never blindly believe everything you are told. Let time prevail and tell the totality of the story. Actions still speak louder than words. 36. Make a man prove his integrity, loyalty, and commitment. If a man is in hot pursuit after you and wants to win you, make him prove his integrity and commit. Make him know you arent just another conquest or catch. Tell him your expectations and what you expect of him if he is to have any place in your life. 37. Dont give away the milk for free until he first buys the cow. Guys dont commit to and marry girls her are loose as a goose. Dont give the milk for free ladies if you want him to buy the cow. There is nothing special about sleeping around. No wed no bed. No ringy no dingy. If he really loves you, he can put a ring on your finger and marry you before he samples the goods. 38. Rule your emotions, rather than be ruled by them. Dont let your emotions get the best of you. Use your head, which will keep you from being misled by your heart. Harness and control your emotions before they lead you astray. Be wise and diligent. 39. Celebrate yourself No matter what anybody does or says, you continue to love yourself. Celebrate you for who you are, a precious princess created in the image of Almighty God. Throw a party in your honor and rejoice! 40. Dance your way to your destiny. Joy and success is contagious. Regardless of how you feel on the inside, be proactive on the outside. Let your face shine like the morning sun in all of its splendor. Let your joy and expectancy, pull you into your destiny. Faith is a might force which will cause you to flourish. Believe your heavenly Father to complete the good work He has began in you. Tips for Designing Bonsai Trees

By Francesca Black Bonsai are shaped by trimming the branches or by wiring them into new positions. You are dealing with living things, and you must be respectful of that. You will kill trees. This is a sad fact of the activity, especially as you start out. Commit yourself to understanding why every tree dies and what can be done to prevent it. Learn from your mistakes and do your best to prevent them in the future. Every tree is different. Learn to care for a few different types of plants, and grow your collection from there. How to Begin the Art of Bonsai Remove the tree from the plastic pot by turning the pot upside down, tapping the bottom, and letting the tree slide out into your hand. The soil should not be too dry, so that the root ball remains intact. Gently scrape away the topsoil around the base of the tree, to expose the lower trunk (about one quarter to one half inch). Try not to break too many surface roots. First thing is to look at the roots of the tree and check to see if it gives the appearance of a strong foundation. Cut off the bottom third of the soil and roots, and flatten out the remaining root mass. Prepare the bonsai pot by placing a piece of screen over each drainage hole, and pour a layer of potting soil into the bottom of the pot. Place the tree in the pot, pour in the remaining soil, and pack it firmly. Finally, submerge the bonsai, pot and all, in water, up to the base of the trunk, and let it sit in the water for a few minutes. Interesting Bonsai Visual Effects In bonsai, the rule of thirds states that the first (lowest and biggest) branch should be at about one third of the total height of the tree. It is the trunk that gives the tree its visual strength, and every effort should be made to have at least the bottom two-thirds of the height clear of branches at the front of the tree. Next is checking the trunk. The shape of the trunk will basically determine the style you choose. In almost all cases, however, a thick base, which tapers gradually and gently to a thin apex, will make for a nice tree. Which style you prefer will depend on the movement of the trunk. Look at the branching pattern. The lower branches should be thick while the upper ones should be thin. The branches should be laid out like the spokes of a wheel with some going to the back. This will give the tree depth when you look at it. No two branches should leave the trunk at the same level. The handlebar effect is unnatural looking and, if left, will cause the trunk to swell at their level causing an ugly bulge in the trunk line. If your tree has such a fault you should, if a deciduous tree, remove one of the branches entirely. Try to avoid having branches spaced evenly down the trunk. Reduce the distance between the branches as you go toward the top of the tree. Finally examine the plant to see if it is healthy. Be sure not to wire so tightly that you cut into the bark, or so loosely that you do not have support. Minor wire marks can sometimes add interest and show that the tree has been trained, giving branches character after several years. However, major wire marks are very ugly. To hide any marks that look unnatural you can strategically place foliage at intervals in front of the trunk, so that the trunk line is not completely visible. It may be ten years (or longer) before your plant will actually be a bonsai. Don’t be discouraged by this, but think of it as part of the experience. Perhaps most importantly, understand that when you put a tree in a pot you are committing yourself to the care of that tree. You cannot simply ignore it or it will die. Bonsai is a responsibility as well as a hobby. If you practice it with care and patience, the rewards are tremendous. Cause Of Stuttering

By Steve Hill When a person has a stutter or a parent realises that their child is developing a stutter they often want to find out the cause. So what causes a stutter? The answer is many things can trigger someone starting to stutter. These are some of them: It can be a traumatic event It can run in the family People may copy a friend at school who has a stutter and then it sticks An over aggressive relative Last year I had a female client who told me how she had developed a stutter. She was fluent until the age of twenty four. At this age she became pregnant for the first time, she was very happy and excited about the prospects about becoming a mother. She was apprehensive about the birth and her friends had been winding her up telling her how painful the experience is. She knew that they were only teasing and tried to keep relaxed. The day of the birth arrived and unfortunately the delivery was particulary hard and she was extremely shocked about how bad it actually was. After the birth of the baby, who was a healthy boy she developed the stutter. Not all people who stutter have it from an early age, another one of my clients was fluent until the age of nineteen. At this age he had a car crash and this was the trigger to him starting to stutter. Stephen Hill Stephen Hill helps people who stutter to achieve fluency. The Third Leading Cause of Death In the USA – Doctors

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marty_Anstell] Marty Anstell The majority of us might find this statistic absolutely unbelievable. Most of us when questioned may provide an answer such as cancer, car accidents, or accidental deaths. It is difficult to fathom that our own health care system is responsible for over two hundred thousand deaths each year. Especially in a country as sophisticated as the USA. Sadly, this is a cold hard fact. Almost spine chilling if you will. And downright frightening. According to Dr, Barbara Starfield, as published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and data provided in the Institute of Medicine report, our own healthcare system is responsible for the demise of thousands of loved ones each year. It is safe to say, these statistics are shocking and reprehensible. This is an intolerable situation given that these fatalities take place in a country that leads the world in medical advancements. According to Dr. Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, The Number of Deaths Per Year Caused by Medical Error Include 80,000 infections derived in hospitals 7,000 medication errors in hospitals 12,000 not needed surgeries 20,000 miscellaneous errors in hospitals 106,000 related to drug side effects This calculated to over 200,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes. What this means is death caused directly by a doctors activity or course of treatment. These statistics follow heart disease and cancer as the leading causes of death in the USA. The USA has the most expensive health care system in the world. This fact alone would make one surmise that it would also be the safest. However, the below data substantiates the fact this is not the case. 13th for low birth weight percentages. That means we have A LOT of low birth weight babies. The Unites States is second only to Japan regarding the availability or MRI units Japan ranks highest on health while the USA ranks amongst the lowest of 29 countries Patients received improper care and treatment 34% of the time Between 20003 and 2005 patient safety incidents in creased by 3% Bedsores cause 115,000 deaths each year In 2003 Health Care spending reached 14% of the Gross National Product at 1.6 trillion dollars. Given the mega bucks spent on health care, one would think we should be bullet Japan ranks highest on health while the USA ranks amongst the lowest of 29 countries Patients received improper care and treatment 34% of the time Between 20003 and 2005 patient safety incidents in creased by 3% Bedsores cause 115,000 deaths each year In 2003 Health Care spending reached 14% of the Gross National Product at 1.6 trillion dollars. Given the mega bucks spent on health care, one would think we should be bullet proof. We should be curing disease, preventing disease, and doing minimal harm. However, this is not the case. Its quite evident, we have a broken system. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association October 8, 2003 recorded the fact that 32,000 surgery related deaths occurred in the year 2000. These deaths were a result of such mishaps as foreign objects left inside wounds, postoperative infections, surgical wounds reopening and uncontrollable bleeding. To add insult to injury, 8.9 million people endured unnecessary hospitalizations in 2001. With regard to nursing home care, the Coalition for Nursing Home Reform estimates that one third of our nations 1.6 million nursing home residents may suffer from dehydration and malnutrition. This state of affairs of course speeds the death process While the above recorded data substantiates how dangerous our medical system can be, one has to ask, what are the majority of reasons most of us end up at the doctors office in the first place? Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, and obesity to name a few. Wonderful news. These are all conditions one may be able to prevent and also reverse in many cases. How do we do this? By eating fruits and vegetables, discontinuing the consumption of processed foods, drinking water, and exercise. It has been postulated, the thought that our health is in our own hands. Given the morbid facts cited above, it may behoove the majority of us to take better care of ourselves. Sexual Harassment Towards Men

By Aaron Schwartz Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual’s employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. Sexual assault is any form of unwanted sexual activity. Forced sexual activity may include kissing, touching, oral sex, and vaginal/anal intercourse. Sexual assaults occur in all ethnic, religious, and economic groups. It can take place in heterosexual and in same-sex relationships. Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to the following: The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. The victim does not have to be of the opposite sex. The harasser can be the victim’s supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee. The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct. Unlawful sexual harassment may occur without economic injury to or discharge of the victim. The harasser’s conduct must be unwelcome. It is helpful for the victim to directly inform the harasser that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop. The victim should use any employer complaint mechanism or grievance system available. The mission of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), as set forth in its strategic plan, is to promote equal opportunity in employment through administrative and judicial enforcement of the federal civil rights laws and through education and technical assistance. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) was established by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and began operating on July 2, 1965. The EEOC enforces the principal federal statutes prohibiting employment discrimination. When investigating allegations of sexual harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission looks at the whole record: the circumstances, such as the nature of the sexual advances, and the context in which the alleged incidents occurred. A determination on the allegations is made from the facts on a case-by-case basis. Prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. Employers are encouraged to take steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. They should clearly communicate to employees that sexual harassment will not be tolerated. They can do so by establishing an effective complaint or grievance process and taking immediate and appropriate action when an employee complains. Businesses take the issue seriously and many provide training for employees. Many commercial services have begun to offer training for managers and employees. The Internet is plastered with commercial websites offering information, products, and services. Despite widespread publicity about the perils of sexual harassment, surveys demonstrate that many businesses operating in the United States have yet to address the problem. Moreover, recent news reports indicate that sexual harassment has reached the highest levels of management. Although businesses know it exists, they appear unsure of what to do about it. As a result, the specter of employer liability for sexual harassment continues to loom over the workplace. Failure to adopt a pro-active and aggressive stance on this issue, how ever, can result not only in costly lawsuits, but also in a loss of employee morale, decline in productivity, and an erosion of a company’s public image. That businesses are still taking chances may reflect a failure to adequately consider the risks. Although men face harassment, women are the most likely victims. Nevertheless, harm caused by sexual harassment is often extreme even for men, including humiliation, loss of dignity, psychological (and sometimes physical) injury, and damage to professional reputation and career. Inevitably, the victims face a choice between their work and their self-esteem. Sometimes, they face a choice between their jobs and their own safety. In recent years, the number of sexual harassment cases filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), as well as in federal and state courts, has climbed dramatically. In 1992, for example, a year after the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings on Capitol Hill, the number of sexual harassment cases filed with EEOC offices across the country jumped fifty percent over the previous year. Complaints about sexual harassment have ranged from fostering of a hostile work environment to demands for prostitution. An effective grievance procedure should provide the complainant with alternative routes for reporting harassment. In setting up grievance procedures, a company may want to consider that women lodge the vast majority of sexual harassment complaints, and that the courts have found differences of perception to exist between men and women. As a result, an employer is better protected if a female employee is involved in assessing sexual harassment complaints. That way, female victims may be more willing to come forward, thus enhancing an employer’s ability to take prompt and effective remedial action. As with any grievance procedure, of course, a company must maintain confidentiality, both for the sake of the victim and the accused. In 1976, the same year that the District Court of the District of Columbia resolved the first Title VII sexual harassment case, a Redbook magazine poll found that nine out of ten women said they had been subjected to unwanted sexual advances at work.13 In 1980, the federal government surveyed its own employees and found that forty-two percent of women stated they had experienced some form of work-related sexual harassment. (In addition, fifteen percent of men reported such harassment.) When the federal government looked at the same issue seven years later, the numbers had not changed. Surveys done in the private sector revealed similar results. These statistics notwithstanding, most cases of sexual harassment still go unreported: as many as ninety-five percent of all such incidents may not be brought to light. According to statistics, by far the majority of sexual harassment is done by men towards women (50-67%) … sexual harassment does happen to working men (15-30%) and that laws and guidelines are often written and languaged as if sexual harassment is only a male to female thing. More than 200 men file sexual harassment charges each year with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — that’s about one-tenth of the number of cases file by women. But more men will experience sexual harassment over the coming years as women assume more positions of power in corporate America, says lawyer Ron Green, who defends companies in sexual harassment cases. And a 1987 survey of federal workers by the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board found that 42% of the women and 14% of the men had reported such harassment. 85% of the girls and 76% of the boys reported some experience of sexual harassment in school. Report by American Association of University Women. Note that various categories of harassment are given, in most cases girls are only slightly higher than boys. I think it is a mistake to “ignore homosexual harassment”. Indeed, a large amount of the total sexual harassment is done by men to men. But it is not necessarily homosexual, per se. That is to say, effeminate men or guys who are different in some other way are often exposed to harassment and teasing much more vicious than anything I’ve ever heard done to a woman. In a addition to outrageous verbal abuse and pranks these guys often face assault, sabotage, and extraordinary levels of isolation. Contrary to popular perception, a large number of sexual harassment cases are filed in the wake of breakups of mutually consensual affairs. The jilted party then begins a campaign of harassment against the one that left, and the one who left eventually files a complaint. In such instances, about 20% of caseload that involved male harassment complaints, are cases started to make womans life more difficult. There was a study conducted in Canada that suggest that men are victims of sexual harassment on the job more often than are women, as long as the same criteria are used for both sexes. A study at OISE by Gina Fisher in 1987 showed that men were more likely to report being sexually harassed (56 percent vs. 51 percent) yet were more tolerant of behaviors from women that women considered harassment from men, suggesting the real gap is much wider.
